Enjoy the rare opportunity to go behind the gates of Courtlandt Place during the neighborhood's Holiday Home Tour, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, December 7 and 8. The Courtlandt Place Historical Foundation is organizing the tour of six homes and three gardens including the recently restored C.L. Neuhaus residence (pictured above), built in 1909 and designed by noted architects Sanguinet & Staats. Preservation Houston will recognize the home's restoration with a 2020 Good Brick Award at the Cornerstone Dinner in February.
Courtlandt Place is the grandest of the "private place" neighborhoods developed in Houston around the turn of the 20th century. The gated boulevard contains homes by some of the most prominent Houston and Texas architects of the day, including Alfred C. Finn, Birdsall Briscoe and John Staub, as well as nationally known firms such as Warren & Wetmore, the designers of Grand Central Terminal in New York.
Tour tickets are available online for $45 in advance, and will be sold for $50 at the gate. A portion of all ticket sales will benefit Preservation Houston.
Courtlandt Place is a private street located one block south of Westheimer between Bagby and Taft. No cars will be allowed to enter Courtlandt during the tour; visitors must use pedestrian gates at either end of the street. The neighborhood recommends using a rideshare service. The final entry will be at 4 p.m. each day.
