Art for the Ages: The Monuments of Glenwood

Please note that advance registration is required for this free online program. Scroll down or click here to register.

From elaborate statuary to crisp modern memorials, the monuments at Houston’s historic Glenwood Cemetery tell the story of 150 years of changing tastes, rising fortunes and varied personal motivations. Find out what we can learn from this art for the ages during an online program at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 21, featuring Preservation Houston Programs Director Jim Parsons and Glenwood Cemetery Executive Director Richard Ambrus.

Using a host of beautiful images, Parsons will discuss the designs, materials and symbolism of monuments featuring weeping angels, classical urns and obelisks, ornate reliefs and even abstract art. You’ll learn why memorials look the way they do, how different materials have been used to create them through the years, and how details like carved flowers on headstones were meant to tell us about the lives and characters of Houstonians who lived decades ago.

The presentation will include details about the future of Glenwood, one of the nation’s outstanding garden-style cemeteries, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2021. A Q&A with the presenter will follow the program.
