The Good Brick Award-winning redevelopment of the Barbara Jordan Post Office as the mixed-use POST Houston is one of the highest-profile preservation projects in the Bayou City today. Join Preservation Houston for an inside look at the work that went into adapting this downtown landmark for new uses during an online Preservation in Practice program with Amanda Barry, historic preservation tax credit manager for Ryan, on Tuesday evening, July 11.
Houston architects Wilson, Morris, Crain & Anderson's crisp, modern downtown post office was the last word in efficiency when it opened in 1962. After decades of service, the post office closed in 2015 and was sold to Lovett Commercial, which began planning to overhaul the facility as a mixed-use retail, dining, office and entertainment complex. The first phase of the conversion, designed by architects OMA, opened to the public in 2021.
Preservation challenges included maintaining the open feel of the warehouse’s vast floor plates while dividing them into retail and office spaces, adding windows in a way that respected the building’s historic design, and planning one of the complex’s crown jewels, a five-acre rooftop garden. The rehabilitation project used historic preservation tax credits, meaning that all the work had to be done to exacting standards.
A Q&A with Barry will follow the presentation.
