St. Paul’s United Methodist Church has invited Preservation Houston members to a special evening of live music, community and history at Jazz on the Plaza, happening from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 10. Enjoy an outdoor concert on the plaza between St. Paul’s historic sanctuary and the Jones Youth Building while taking in the architectural beauty of this Houston landmark.
Bring a blanket or a chair and settle in for an evening of jazz under the Texas sky. Food trucks will be on-site with a variety of dining options, but please note that alcohol is not permitted.
As part of the evening’s festivities, St. Paul’s will offer tours of its sanctuary, which received a Good Brick Award for its outstanding restoration. Designed by Alfred C. Finn and completed in 1930, the Gothic Revival building had weathered decades of Houston’s climate, leaving its limestone walls darkened and its historic steel casement windows in need of repair.
The restoration focused on cleaning and stabilizing the exterior, restoring all of the building’s 300 original windows and replacing clouded plastic over the stained glass with clear glass, allowing more natural light to filter into the space. The project also included critical infrastructure upgrades, water damage repairs and an extensive renovation of the basement level to improve accessibility and functionality. The result is a beautifully preserved landmark that continues to serve its congregation and the wider community.
No registration is required — just come and enjoy the music, the setting and the company. St. Paul’s is located at 5501 Main Street in the Museum District; free parking is available in the church lot on the northeast corner of San Jacinto and Binz (enter from Binz).
