Texas Historical Commission (THC) voted January 27 voted to designate the Astrodome a State Antiquities Landmark (SAL). Officially known as the Harris County Domed Stadium, the Astrodome joins other Texas icons, including the Alamo and the State Capitol, as SAL-designated sites.
"The Astrodome is not just an important part of Houston's cultural history," THC Executive Director Mark Wolfe said. "Architecturally, it is one of the most significant sports and entertainment venues in history, setting the standard for modern facilities around the world."
The SAL designation offers the highest level of protection under Texas law. Designated historic properties, shipwrecks or archaeological sites cannot be removed, altered, damaged, salvaged or excavated without a permit from Texas Historical Commission.
