The renovation proposal for the Reliant Astrodome that was approved yesterday by the Harris County Sports & Convention Corp. (HCSCC) is now available online. Click here to view the package presented to the HCSCC Board of Directors.
The proposed improvements would provide 350,000 square feet of on-grade, column-free event space under a 175-foot ceiling, creating a unique exhibition facility capable of handling the largest conventions and special events.
The $194 million project would include removing the ramp towers added in the 1990s, removing the interior seating, raising the floor to street level, adding energy efficient systems, installing glassed entries at the four compass points, and building 400,000 square feet of plaza and green space. Income from rentals would pay for the renovated stadium's upkeep. In order to complete the project in time for the 2017 Super Bowl, work would need to commence immediately following the 2014 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
Harris County Commissioners Court will now review the plan. Commissioners are expected to vote on the proposal during their capital improvements meeting on June 25.
